Mackworth Island – permanent Fairy Houses Village!

The Mackworth Island permanent Fairy Houses Village was established by local families in cooperation with the State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Land and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf.

This superb village has been established for several years and gets more magical all the time! It is in constant use all year round (weather permitting.)

The village is a 10 minute walk from the parking lot around the island to the north side. The island is accessible by road, but parking is limited. Mackworth Island is located in Falmouth, just off route 1 heading north from Portland.

See Google Maps.

The official Fairy Houses Village sign reads:

“The village provides fairies with cottages during their visits to the island. We invite you to visit the village and admire the creativity of the builders. If you are so inclined, you may use your own imagination to expand the village or provide needed maintenance to the existing cottages. Thank you for treating the island with care and respect.
This helps to keep the fairies coming back!”

HELP! The first time I stumbled across the Fairy Village, many years ago I thought,” Oh how sweet and creative and fun,” but now it’s gotten out of control. The location has grown way beyond it’s bounds and is destroying the landscape. The idea of the fairy village is majykal, creative and enjoyable and if people would/could contain themselves to the one area, as was the original intent, then that may be just fine. But the reality at Mackworth right now is that either people are not reading or not heeding the rules. I’m not big on rules myself, but there are really good reasons for the ones at Mackworth, i.e. preserving nature (the reason many of us go there in the first place). The Village sign says only buildings under a certain # of feet, but many structures exceed this (which is actually dangerous.) It also designates THIS ONE AREA ONLY but a second area has become almost as large a long way from the original. Then there are additional houses littered all over the island! All we need do is look at the fairy village. Observe the ground in contrast to the woods beyond the village. There is little to no vegetation left. The walking path around Macworth becomes, over time, a hard packed, gravely, lifeless trail because nothing can grow and the soil is packed by the weight of the shear number of us humans. This can be fine when the trail is the designated place for us and the rest of the area is left to thrive. But with people constantly leaving the trail to “build” all the ground gets packed and the low level vegetation suffers. If you look at the second area that I speak of you will see some lily of the valley… a lot out in front, but as you enter into the area you will see it trampled and nonexistent as you move further in. People, in there haste and excitement to commune with the fairies, ignore there natural habitat! This is not educating our children on the sanctity or beauty of nature, this is disrespectful of the very thing we are trying to get them better in tune with. I acknowledge that people really are trying to be a part of the nature that they fall in love with on Mackworth, but we are a poorly educated lot when it comes to nature’s needs and how her’s are not always in line with our wants. If we continue at this pace the ground of the whole island, eventually, will look like the walking path, because every inch has been trampled for our building. Please let’s take responsibility for our actions here. Can we organize a clean up? Perhaps some signs in other areas reminding folks not to build anywhere else? Let’s teach our children about the impact we humans have and how to truly care for the fairies!
