How to Build

Location

Fairy Houses can take many forms and can be created in many different places.
Find a quiet place away from roads or busy pathways. The base of a tree or the side of a rock could be just right. Close to the ground is usually best. Sometimes you may find a special place in the low branches of a tree or bush.

Look for building areas in woods, beaches, meadows, and especially your own backyard! Use only natural materials to build your house – nothing artificial.

Many fairy houses look so natural that they are almost hidden. Have fun building them everywhere, in every season, and enjoy all of your special visitors!

Materials

Sticks, bark, dry grasses, pebbles, shells, feathers, seaweed, pinecones and nuts are just some of the materials you can use. A fairy house built in the woods will look different than one built at the beach!

Different seasons will give constantly changing materials that you can use. Be imaginative!

Rules

Be respectful of plants that are growing. Try not to disturb plants that are still living, such as ferns, mosses and flowers. Fairies are careful not to harm anything that is growing.

The book, Fairy Houses, includes six pages of instructions and the video, Kristen’s Fairy House, comes with a leaflet on building fairy houses.

Wow! One of the most innovative, inspirational and simple ways I’ve seen to connect children of all ages with nature. I am looking forward to my Natural Fairy themed work with middle school girls. Thank You, Tracy!

wow At first i didn’t know how to make this but then i realized i had little ground lamps so i broke of dried anise sticks from my anise plant and glued them around the lamp walls. I have seed pods that fall in my yard that hard a orange color that i used as shingles and i use small flower petals and glue to make a stained glass in one section. I also used bark as a door an dried grass for thatching under the tiles. I then stuck the ground lamp back i the ground. It has a solar panel on top so a night it glows and its very pretty especially the stained glass! ^_^

I’m not sure if its just me, but mine never come out as good as the ones in the pictures. They always fall apart and get crushed or blown away. They are fun to make though!!!

Me and my friends make fairy houses a lot. But going against the natural materials only rule, we usually bring twine with us. The brown stuff. I’m sure that there are other kinds of twine too. We use it to make archways for the garden and stuff. But we try not to use too much of it, because then it doesn’t look as natural. Oh, and by the way I’m 11 and i have been doing this for a while now

    Octopus out!!!
